Two received WCAA 2007 Alumnae Service Award

Helene Mambu-ma-Disu and Rachel DeLugish Hastings
The Western College Alumnae Association (WCAA) recognized two of its own for "community and humanitarian service through professional accomplishments" with its 2007 Alumnae Service Award at the annual June reunion.

Rachel DeLugish Hastings, a 1994 graduate of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies/Western College program, was honored for her advocacy and activism on behalf of communities in Ohio and Kentucky. For more than a decade, she has worked on low-income housing development and community planning, primarily for the city of Covington, Ky.

In her current position as director of neighborhood and housing initiatives at the Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington, Hastings was largely responsible for the city's selection as a pilot site for the Place Matters Initiative, a new collaborative that helps coordinate community investment to remove blighted properties, create and implement homeowner incentives, and increase student success in the local school district.

Helene Mambu-ma-Disu, a 1972 graduate of Western College, is a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire).

Mambu-ma-Disu is following her dream of public service as both a diplomat and a doctor. In spite of serious personal health issues, she has worked in her chosen field, promoting community participation to raise awareness, attempting to involve people in the entire health process, and seeking to reach "every health district, every health area and every child" with lifesaving vaccines.

Since 2001 she has been Resident Representative for Cameroon to the World Health Organization.

The Alumnae Service Award -- created in 1988 to recognize living alumnae, alumni, former faculty or administrators for significant contributions in the areas of community and humanitarian service, professional or career accomplishment, or service to the Western College Alumnae Association -- has been presented to 36 honorees.
