Urell named acting provost
Joe Urell, associate provost, will serve as acting provost and vice president for academic affairs at Miami University during the search for a replacement for Provost Anne Hopkins, who has been named president of the University of North Florida.
"I know that faculty will join me in expressing gratitude to Joe for his willingness to assume this important responsibility," said Miami President James C. Garland. "He has the background, experience and leadership ability to ensure that the university's academic goals continue to move forward."
Urell's new assignment will probably begin in early 1999, Garland said, explaining that an exact starting date depends upon when Provost Hopkins assumes the presidency at the University of North Florida.
Urell joined Miami's faculty in 1968 as an instructor in the geography department. A year later, he was appointed administrative assistant in the College of Arts and Science and was promoted to associate dean in 1978. He served as acting dean of the college in 1982, before being appointed associate provost in 1983.
Urell served as acting provost for two years from July 1989 through June 1991.
He received a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Oneonta, a master's from Miami and a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati.
