Miami sports behind new sitcom

09/15/1998

OXFORD, Ohio -- Keen eyes will recognize Miami University teams in the

background of some scenes in the new ABC situation comedy "Sports Night," which

premieres at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The show is set in a cable sports production office and video of Miami

intercollegiate athletic games (football, hockey, men's and women's basketball,

women's track and volleyball) will run on some of the television monitors.

Miami's opportunity comes from a behind-the-scenes connection: Miami mass

communication alumna, Toni Ellis `85, is manager of post-production at

Dreamworks SKG, which used the tapes for the short-lived "Arsenio" show. Ellis

passed the idea to a colleague at Imagine Productions, which is producing

"Sports Night."

Since NCAA rules prohibit current student-athletes from appearing in

commercial programs, the university sent tape at least five years old.

Producers paid a small fee to the mass communication area for use of the

tapes.
