Speech Team places 7th in national tournament


OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University's speech team placed 7th out of 94 teams competing in the 28th annual National Forensic Association National Tournament in Macomb, Ill.

"We are very pleased with our performance," said coach Leah White, instructor in communication at Miami. "This year we had 14 different events in elimination rounds, representing seven members of the team."

Students who won individual awards follow:

Phil Ruth, semifinalist in prose interpretation and after-dinner speaking.

Amanda Hickman, quarterfinalist in extemporaneous speaking, semifinalist in rhetorical criticism

Andy Cleary, quarterfinalist in extemporaneous speaking and rhetorical criticism.

Chris Tenaglia, quarterfinalist in extemporaneous speaking, persuasive speaking and impromptu speaking and semifinalist in rhetorical criticism.

Alyssa Wright, quarterfinalist in persuasive speaking and rhetorical criticism.

Laura Batt, quarterfinalist in after-dinner speaking.

Dan Hungerman, semifinalist in after-dinner speaking.
