Miami University spring commencement May 10


OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University will award 2,973 degrees at its 159th annual spring commencement ceremony Sunday, May 10.

Students in the School of Applied Science, Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration and the School of Education and Allied Professions will receive their degrees at 9:30 a.m.

Students in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, the School of Fine Arts and the College of Arts and Science will receive degrees at 2 p.m.

Miami President James C. Garland will preside at both ceremonies.

Colleen M. Dec, 33 English Lane, Lincroft, N.J. 07738, will be the student speaker at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. Jonathan K. David, 215 Joetta Drive, Lucasville, will be the student speaker at the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Mark R. Niederhelman, president of the Miami University Alumni Association, will make remarks at both ceremonies.

Nathan R. Estep, secretary for academic affairs of Associated Student Government, will present the Outstanding Teaching Awards at the afternoon exercises. The Benjamin Harrison Medallion will also be awarded at that ceremony.

Air Force and Navy commissions will be presented.

Music will be provided by the Miami University Symphony Band, conducted by Jack N. Liles, professor of music, and the Miami University Choraliers, conducted by Jill K. Donnelly, 8726 Cambridge Drive, Versailles, with Clayton Parr, associate professor of music.

Degrees to be awarded include 144 associate, 2,567 bachelor's, 239 master's, five specialist in education, one doctor of education and 17 doctor of philosophy.
