Ohio Writing Project Spring Conference


OXFORD, Ohio -- National Teacher of the Year Sharon Draper and filmmakers Stephen Bognar and Alex Rivera are among the featured speakers at a two-day multi-cultural conference at Miami University sponsored by the Ohio Writing Project.

Theme of the conference, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, is exploring the borders that exist in human experience.

March 27 events include:

  • Conference registration from 6:30-7 p.m. in the lobby of Pearson Hall.

  • A showing and discussion from 7-9 p.m. of Stephen Bognar's Personal Belongings and Alex Rivera's Papa Papá in 128 Pearson Hall.

March 28 events, all held in the Shriver Center, include:

  • Keynote address from 9-10 a.m. by Sharon Draper, Walnut Hills High School English Teacher and the 1997 National Teacher of the Year.

  • Three breakout discussions from 10:15-11:30 a.m. Discussion topics will be the Harlem Renaissance, telling stories through film and teenagers evaluating modern media.

  • A lunch presentation from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. with Alicia Chavez, an instructor in Miami's educational leadership department whose family is the subject of the Newbery Award-winning book And Now, Miguel.

  • A presentation and discussion from 1-2:15 p.m. of Whose Morals Are We Talking About? Language In The Contact Zone by instructors from Miami, Princeton and Lockland high schools in Cincinnati and Clay High School in Florida.

Cost for the conference is $35 or $15 for Miami students and staff with a valid ID. For additional information or to register, call (513) 529-5245.
