Pamela Fox named Dean of Fine Arts
Dr. Pamela Fox, professor and chair of the music department at Miami University, has been named dean of the university's School of Fine Arts.
"Pamela Fox is a wonderful and wonderfully talented individual who brings to the deanship a great deal of experience and enthusiasm. She will provide strong, dynamic leadership both to the School of Fine Arts and the larger university," said Provost Anne Hopkins.
Fox succeeds Hayden May, dean of the school since 1983, who has announced his plan to return to teaching in the architecture department.
Noted for her teaching ability, Fox has received several awards, including the Alumni Teaching Award in 1994 and the Alumni Enrichment Award in 1995. She has been nominated eight times by former students for Miami's Effective Educator Award.
Her research interest is in 18th century music and the cultural history of cultivated and vernacular American music. Fox's book, Life in Boston l890-l920: Cultural Counterpoint and the Myth of the Middleground, is to be published this year by Northeastern University Press.
She has contributed chapters to three other books, written professional papers for leading journals and presented juried and invited papers throughout the United States and abroad. She also has received a number of grants to support her research.
Fox, an active member and officer of several leading professional societies, has served as a consultant to the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ohio Arts Council, the Boston Public Library, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and several publishers.
Fox began her Miami career as an instructor of music in 1982. She served as associate dean of the School of Fine Arts from 1991-96 and as acting chair of the music department in 1996-97. She was named chair in 1997.
She received her undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Cincinnati.
The appointment, effective July 1, is subject to approval by Miami's board of trustees at its April 24 meeting.
