Library Reaches 2 Million Volumes
Miami University's King Library will celebrate the acquisition of its 2,000,000th volume with a program of celebration and dedication at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in room 112 of the library.
Dr. Phillip Shriver, president emeritus and professor of history at Miami, will be the keynote speaker.
The two millionth volume is a 15th century illuminated manuscript, Book of Hours, purchased for the Walter Havighurst Special Collections.
"This book fills an important gap in our history of the book collection, and the many classes that visit special collections will benefit from seeing this wonderful example of the manuscript book," said Judith Sessions, dean and university librarian.
The festivities will also include dedication of the Inez Kamm Electronic Instruction Room and an opportunity to tour the newly renovated first floor of the library.
Through various electronic media, Miami University Libraries patrons have access to thousands of academic journals and databases at other sites and untold amounts of information via the World Wide Web.
Representative of the increase in electronic texts is the libraries' 2,000,001st volume, William Holmes McGuffey at Miami University 1826-1836, a digital book created entirely online.
