OXFORD, Ohio -- Winnifred Bryant, a doctoral student in Miami University's zoology department, has been awarded a minority fellowship in neurosciences for 1998-99 from the National Institute of Mental Health.

The fellowship, renewable for two additional years, is worth a minimum of $11,500 per year.

Her dissertation project focuses on the endocrine effects of a newly discovered protein in the brain called Orphanin FQ. She is looking at how Orphanin FQ affects or regulates the secretion of prolactin and growth hormones.

Bryant's faculty advisers are Phyllis Callahan and James Janik.

Bryant, a 1993 graduate of Shorter College, Rome, Ga., received a master's degree in zoology from Miami in 1997.
