Two Miami Students are Truman Finalists


OXFORD, Ohio -- Chemistry major Sarah Stewart and psychology major Emilee Thompson are finalists for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a prestigious national award recognizing students with strong leadership skills and a commitment to a career in public service.

Between 75-80 scholars will be chosen from a finalist pool of 200 students nationwide. Miami is the only Ohio school with two finalists.

The $30,000 scholarship includes $27,000 for graduate study.

Stewart, of East Peoria, Ill., will attend a joint degree program in medicine and international public health policy with plans to work for public policies that improve the health care of people in developing countries.

Thompson, of Columbus, is also minoring in women's studies at Miami and intends to pursue a master's of social work to prepare for a career with an advocacy organization that addresses domestic violence.
