Student Attacked on Vine Street

OXFORD, Ohio -- A 19-year-old Miami University student was attacked about 2:45 a.m. Monday (Jan. 19) while walking off campus on E. Vine Street near Campus Avenue.

The victim, who was struck in the head with a baseball-bat-like object, was taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital and then transferred to University of Cincinnati Hospital. He was discharged from the hospital Tuesday, according to hospital officials.

Two assailants got out of a light blue or gray car, possibly a late 1980s Cavalier, and approached the students from behind, according to Oxford police. The second student outran the assailants and summoned assistance.

The attacker was described as a white male in his late teens or early 20s, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and more than 200 pounds.

Oxford Police are investigating the incident.

Six-hundred copies of a crime alert warning the university community about the event were distributed Monday and Tuesday.

A revised version of the crime alert was issued by Miami Thursday, Jan. 22, after university officials became aware of new information.

Originally, there was no apparent motive for the assault, but subsequently a witness told Oxford police about racist and homophobic remarks made by the attackers that may indicate bias was a motivation for the attack.
