MIAMI RECEIVES TECHNOLOGY GRANT FROM REGENTS

06/26/1997

OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University today received $693,000 from the

Ohio Board of Regents Technology Initiative Program to improve students' access

to the Internet.

Miami's successful proposal was one of only 22 funded out of 43

submitted.

The university will provide a $1.25 million match for the project,

designed to increase students' access to people, ideas and resources via the

Internet.

The two goals of the initiative are to:

  • Increase the speed of the university's network by a factor of 10,

allowing the delivery of more complex multimedia materials to more students and

facilitating collaborative interactions between and among students, faculty and

    sources outside the university.

  • Stimulate the educational use of the network and evaluate how well

    this use facilitates independent learning.

The project also will establish a common structure for network files and

security.

The grant helps advance a priority in Miami's functional mission statement

to enrich learning through new technologies.

Within the past three years, the university has invested more than $2

million in technologically enhanced classrooms, created five new instructional

technology positions, made major investments in a new data and video network

and implemented a grant program to support creative uses of learning

technologies.
