OXFORD, Ohio -- This summer, the civil rights movement

will come to life for incoming freshmen at Miami University

through Freedom Summer Revisited 1997.

The original Freedom Summer, held in 1964, brought 700

college students from across the country to Oxford's Western

College campus for two weeks of training on voter

registration, community organizing and nonviolent action.

Days after the first group of students headed south,

three activists--James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Mickey

Schwerner--disappeared. The FBI discovered their bodies two

months later.

This summer’s program is a weeklong orientation for

about 22 incoming students.

The students will gather July 12 at Peabody Hall on the

Western College campus, now part of Miami, and then travel to

Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
