Women's Entrepreneurship Symposium April 5

Miami University’s Page Center for Entrepreneurship presents its second annual women’s symposium on entrepreneurship from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Miami’s Marcum Conference Center.

The one-day symposium, titled "Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship II: Capturing Dreams...Building Realities," seeks to:

  • Celebrate the accomplishments of female entrepreneurs

  • Explore challenges and opportunities confronting entrepreneurs

  • Provide insights and perspectives on the path to entrepreneurial success

  • Achieve balance between work and personal life

Last year’s program was standing room only.

"In the entrepreneurial revolution going on the United States, women have been leading the way," said Michael Morris, center director, explaining that between 1987 and 1999, the number of women-owned firms increased by 103 percent nationwide and their sales grew by 436 percent.

Women entrepreneurs of various ages and backgrounds from California to Chicago to Cincinnati will share strategies, knowledge, advice and inspiration.

Keynote speaker Jo Ann Barefoot of JS Barefoot Company, a writer and consultant, will address "Beginnings, Middles and Ends: A Look at the Total Entrepreneurial Experience." Barefoot was the first female deputy comptroller of the currency in the U.S. Treasury Department and consulted for the nation’s top financial institutions before selling her firm to KPMG Consulting.

Other speakers include Ann Bain, Armrel-Byrnes Co.; Sandy Balentine, McCullough-Hyde Hospital; Linda Balogh, WOXY Radio; Debbie Bolen, Small Business Administration; Shannon Carter, Crayons to Computers; Burnette Clingman, Burnette Clingman Enterprises; Evelyn Echols, International Travel Training Schools; Pat Edmister, Phillips Graduate Institute; Lisa May Evans, Thompson, Hine and Flory; Patricia Greene, University of Missouri, Kansas City.

Registration is $45 ($10 for students), which includes lunch at the Marcum Center and a 4:30 p.m. reception hosted by the Entrepreneurial Resource Lab, Miami’s business incubator.
