Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship goes to Miami senior
Miami University senior Gregory Cooper has received a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Predoctoral Fellowship in Biological Sciences.
The fellowship, which provides an $18,000 yearly stipend plus tuition for up to five years of study toward a doctorate, is awarded to 80 outstanding students to pursue a Ph.D. in fundamental biological or biomedical research.
Cooper, from Edgewood, Ky., double majors in microbiology and mathematics and statistics, and has conducted research in the laboratory of Mary Woodworth (microbiology and associate provost) and at research laboratories at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and the University of Cincinnati.
He plans to attend Stanford University to pursue a doctorate in bioinformatics.
