Ford Scholarships advance diversity in business school

11/01/2001

Ten Miami University students have been named Ford Scholars and are the first recipients of grants given by Ford Motor Co. to Miami’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business to encourage the success of minority business students.

The Ford Scholars Program was established last spring with a $50,000 gift. The 10 Ford Scholars, including freshmen, juniors and seniors, each have received $5,000 grants. They were selected from among 30 applicants and were judged on merit, leadership, academics and community service.

The scholars include Alesia Black, senior accountancy and economics major; Melissa Higgins, senior marketing major; Jackie Shropshire, senior marketing major; Yu-Fang Yu, senior marketing major; Adriana Samudio, junior marketing and decision sciences major; Amber Johnson, junior general business major; Vikas Satyal, junior management information systems major; Trenton Nalls, freshman general business major; Maria E. Cubol, freshman general business major; Desmond Brown, freshman general business major.

Ford Scholars are part of Miami’s Minority Business Students Network, which provides professional and academic support for minority students. Ford assigns professional mentors to each scholar and the business school provides an academic mentor. "The Ford Scholarship assures me that my hard work, perseverance and giving back to my community merit success," said Yu.

"The partnership between Ford and Miami will advance our goals of diversity and inclusion at the corporate and academic levels," said Bill Madison, manager of diversity enrollment for the Richard T. Farmer School of Business and Ford Scholars adviser.

The Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University is ranked among the nation’s top 50 undergraduate business programs by U.S. News & World Report. The business school offers 11 majors, 12 minors and has the nation’s #1 ranked undergraduate entrepreneurship program. For more information, contact Jennifer Bailey at baileyjg@muohio.edu.
