Moscow Philharmonic at Miami Dec. 6

11/16/2001

The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in Millett Hall, part of the Miami University Performing Arts Series.

Yuri Simonov will conduct Glinka’s Waltz-Fantasy for Orchestra and selections from Tchaikovsky’s "The Nutcracker." Kyoko Takezawa will join the orchestra as soloist in the Shostakovich Concerto No. 1 for Violin and Orchestra.

The Moscow Philharmonic, founded in 1951, is considered one of the world’s most outstanding symphonic groups. The ensemble includes more than 100 musicians, is featured on more than 100 recordings and has performed for more than 5,000 concerts.

Simonov was born into a family of opera singers and made his conducting debut at age 12. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and in 1968 was the first Russian to win the Santa Cecilia Conducting Competition in Rome. His posts include chief conductor of the Bolshoi Opera from 1969 to 1985. He was named music director of the Moscow Philharmonic in 1998.

Takezawa is a 1989 graduate of New York’s Juilliard School. A native of Japan, she began studying the violin at age 3 and at age 7 performed on tour in several countries including the United States.

She won the gold medal at the Indianapolis International Violin Competition in 1986 and has since appeared in orchestral, chamber music, festival and recital engagements.

The Miami performance is sponsored by the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies and the John W. Altman Charitable Foundation. The Havighurst Center will provide light refreshments for all concertgoers at intermission.

Tickets are $14 for Miami students and youth, $26 for senior citizens and $28 for other adults. For tickets or more information, call the Miami box office at 9-3200.
