External grants and contracts top last year's record

Miami faculty and staff received external grants and contracts this past year totaling more than $15.1 million, a 6.9 percent increase over last year's record high.

When more than $9.2 million in student financial aid is included, the total increases to $24.4 million.

Of the 322 awards received July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002, research grants accounted for 55 percent while 41 percent were for instruction and four percent were for service.

The largest single source of funding was the Ohio Board of Regents, with 3.6 million in funds for the Ohio Systemic Initiative and for the Ohio Eminent Scholar position in chemistry and biochemistry, among other projects. The National Science Foundation was the second largest source of funding with $2.43 million for 19 project awards.

“Miami would be a far different institution without the extensive support Miami’s faculty has been able to gain from outside sources,” says Robert Johnson, acting director of the office for advancement of scholarship and teaching and associate provost and dean of the graduate school. Our undergraduates and graduate students benefit immensely from studying with a faculty that is committed to excellence in research and teaching.”
