Kiplinger's: Miami is top Ohio bargain

10/21/2003

The November issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine recently released its list of the 100 best values in public education, ranking Miami University as the top bargain in Ohio and 53rd nationally.

Only two other Ohio colleges appeared - Ohio State (72) and Ohio University (99).

Magazine editors explained that their survey of public colleges and universities “shines a spotlight on schools that combine great academics with reasonable costs.”

The rankings were arrived at by compiling the top 200 schools with the highest percentage of the 2002-2003 freshman class scoring above 600 on the verbal and math components of the SAT 1 exam or scoring above 24 on the ACT.

Next, that list was culled to the top 100 schools based on other measures of academic quality, including admission rates, student-faculty ratios, the percentage of faculty with the highest degree in their field, how much each school spends on instruction for each student, how much each school spends on library facilities and four- and six-year graduation rates.

Finally, the editors ranked each school on a combination of quality and cost components, including tuition, mandatory fees, room and board costs, the average percentage of need met by aid and the average debt a student accumulates before graduation.

Overall, the magazine’s scoring placed more weight on quality - which accounts for about two-thirds of the final score - than on cost.

The public university that scored the best in the nation is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“Getting external recognition for being a top value is always gratifying,” said Miami President James Garland. “I’m pleased that Ohio placed three public universities on this prestigious list. It goes without saying that it’s even better that Miami was ranked first.”
