Forum-Debate on Latin American Immigration


A forum-debate "Latin American Immigration: Good or Bad for our Nation?" will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Heritage Room in the Shriver Center at Miami University.

The event will open with presentations by three invited speakers, followed by brief statements from representatives of various student groups. The second half of will be a forum inviting audience participation.

Invited talks include:

  • “Inside-Out: Connecting U.S. Immigration/Host Community Issues with U.S. Relationships with Latin America,” by Joshua Heyman, professor of anthropology at the University of Texas-El Paso;

  • “Coming of Age in Two Worlds: Caribbean Immigrant Youth and Minority Activism in the U.S.,” Altagracia Sánchez-Ruiz, Americorps City Year, Philadelphia; and

  • “Remembering the Alamo: Latino Perspectives on Immigration, Presidential Politics and U.S. Economic Imperatives,” Baldemar Velásquez, president and founder of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO.

The forum-debate is part of Miami’s Center for American and World Cultures lecture series “Homeless in the World: A Global Crisis,” and UniDiversity, a series of events that focus on Latin America.

It is co-sponsored by the Association of Latin and American Students, the Latin American studies program, the Robert Hamilton Bishop Debate Society and Sigma Lambda Beta Latino-based fraternity.
