"Homeless in the World" conference Nov. 12-13


A conference, "Homeless in the World: A Human Rights Perspective," will be held at Miami University Nov. 12-13, part of the Robert E. Strippel Memorial Continuing Dialogue on Justice and Human Rights.

The Friday morning program includes sessions on “Homeless in America,” “Homeless Abroad” and “Threats.” The afternoon program will feature a human rights film festival and information fair.

Saturday’s program includes a trip to the Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine.

Cynthia Bogard, Hofstra University, will give the plenary address on “Seasons Such as These: The Persistence of Homelessness in America” at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the Shriver Center multipurpose room.

Other speakers include Steve Walker, Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services; Don Whitehead, director, National Coalition for the Homeless; Miami faculty member Linn Song; folk artist Lonnie Holley; Anita Fábos, University of East London; Katherine O’Donnell, Hartwick College; members of a Mayan weavers cooperative; and Premalata Shankar, The Center for Blood Research, Harvard Medical School.

The conference is co-sponsored by Miami’s Center for American and World Cultures, Etheridge Center for Reflective Leadership, Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute, Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine, office of service learning and civic leadership and the Robert E. Strippel Memorial Fund with support from the Citizens of the World Initiative and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
