Job market improving for grads
Just over half of the employers surveyed at a recent Miami University career fair said their entry level hiring will increase in the coming year.
Representatives of 174 employers met with more than 2,700 students at the Sept. 21 career fair.
Fifty-one percent of the respondents indicated their entry level hiring will increase. Only 7 percent expected a decrease in entry level hiring.
Communication skills, for several years straight, remain as the most important quality sought in candidates, followed closely by motivation, work ethic, good grades, work experience and leadership.
Two-thirds of the respondents said more than 40 percent of their new hires come from on-campus recruiting efforts. We are pleased with the improvement in hiring projections, but were still telling students that the job market remains extremely competitive, said Richard Hearin, director of career services at Miami.
A new trend developing is the requirement of the candidates to use an online application process. Of the 67 percent of organizations that use this process, nearly half require it.
