Lilly Conference Nov. 18-21 at Miami


Hundreds of educators were at Miami for the 24th Annual Lilly Conference on College Teaching, running through Sunday at Miami's Marcum Conference Center.

50 featured presenters and 150 contributed paper presenters will conduct seminars on topics ranging from ethics in the classroom and dealing with disruptive students to motivating undergraduates and using blogs.

The four plenary speakers include:

• Marcia Baxter Magolda (educational leadership) 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Baxter Magolda is the co-author of Learning Partnerships, a topic she will focus on during her lecture.

• Ron Berk, Johns Hopkins University, 8:15 p.m. Friday. He will speak on “Humor as a Coping Strategy for the Stressors of Academe.” Berk is a professor of biostatistics and measurement and author of Professors Are From Mars, Students Are From Snickers and Humor as an Instructional Defibrillator.

• Torgny Roxa, Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden, 10:50 a.m. Saturday. Roxa manages the Breakthrough Project, with an objective of initiating and maintaining a shift from teaching-focused to learning-focused teaching. His presentation will be “How to Change a Teaching Paradigm: An Example.”

• Barbara Walvoord, University of Notre Dame, 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Walvoord is coauthor of Effective Grading and a member of the Institute for Educational Initiatives. Her session will help faculty examine their teaching practices for effectiveness and efficiency.
