Fall commencement Dec. 17


Miami awarded 950 diplomas at its fall commencement ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, in Millett Hall, with President James C. Garland presiding.

Student speaker was Kathryn L. Hone from the School of Fine Arts. Rex Huffman (Miami ’72), president of the Miami University Alumni Association, presented brief remarks.

The E. Phillips Knox Teaching Award, given annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching at the undergraduate level, was announced. There are two winners this year, Phillip Cottel, professor of accountancy, and Jeffrey Sommers, professor of English at Miami's Middletown campus.

Organist Roderick E. Nimtz, assistant executive director at Miami Middletown, presented the music.

Conferral of diplomas included 82 associate’s, 702 bachelor’s, 148 master’s, 15 doctorates and three specialists in education.
