Applications up at Miami

Overall, Miami University is on pace to receive a record number of applications for the freshman class for the third consecutive year.

University officials are particularly pleased that applications from African Americans are up 12 percent as of today (Dec. 30). That follows increases of 27 percent two years ago and 14 percent last year.

The increase in African American applications is particularly significant in that it is occurring at a time when many of the nation's top public universities have experienced declines.

The list of schools that saw steep drops in applicants from African Americans last year included the University of Michigan, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Illinois, said Mike Mills, Miami's director of admissions.

He attributes the increase at Miami to sustained outreach to schools and community groups such as the Urban League, Upward Bound, the Ohio College Access Network and others.

Making the university more diverse racially, ethnically, socio-economically, and geographically broadens the undergraduate experience and makes a Miami degree even more sought after, said Mills.

Deadline for applying for admission for fall semester is Jan. 31, 2005.
