Allen Berger honored by College Reading Association

Allen Berger, Heckert Professor of Reading and Writing at Miami University, has received the College Reading Association's Laureate Award for 2005. It was given at the association's annual meeting in Savannah, Ga.

The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the College Reading Association and the fields of reading and reading instruction. Selection is determined on the following basis:

1. Influence on other reading professionals through mentoring, teaching and other activities.

2. Longevity of membership in CRA.

3. Research, publications and presentations that include collaboration with students, teachers and other professionals.

4. Participation in CRA activities such as serving on the board, committees and participation at conferences.

Berger, the author of approximately 400 articles on reading and writing education, served on an eight-person task force to revise the nationwide Standards for Reading Professionals (International Reading Association, 2004) and co-edited Secondary School Reading: What Research Reveals for Classroom Practice.

Active in the National Council of Teachers of English, he has chaired its resolutions committee and was the editor for seven years of NCTE's quarterly publication, English Education.

He is founder of Teens for Literacy, a reading and leadership program for inner city middle school students.

The College Reading Association is an international association of literacy professionals founded in 1958.
