Jobe and Sheehan named Fulbright Scholars
J. Marcus Jobe, professor of decision sciences and management information systems, and James J. Sheehan, assistant professor of teacher education, are among 850 individuals nationwide to be awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant for the 2005-2006 academic year.
Sheehan traveled to the Philippines in the summer to do research on the influence of American Colonial policy on the education of Filipino teachers from 1898-1941. He worked at the Philippine Normal University in Manila.
Basically, there was no widespread public education in the Philippines before the U.S. established a kindergarten-through-university level system based on the American model, according to Sheehan. Today, he says, education is highly valued in the Philippines.
Sheehan ultimately plans to write a book on America's influence on the Philippine education system and has already been invited by Aeteno University in Manila to submit a journal article on the subject. It was a good experience, says Sheehan of his Fulbright honor.
Jobe has been teaching and doing research at the L'viv Institute of Management in L'viv, Ukraine, since August as a Senior Fulbright Scholar.
His lecture series and curriculum development efforts are focusing on the insights and tools for improving business decision-making. Specifically, business statistics, quality improvement and data mining topics are being explored.
Jobe and Sheehan are among about 850 faculty and professionals selected to travel to about 150 countries for the 2005-06 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Fulbright recipients are chosen on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
The Fulbright program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.
