Student Kate Voegele wins USA Songwriting Competition

Miami freshman Kate Voegele won the 2005 USA Songwriting Competition in the pop category for her song "Only Fooling Myself." At 19, Voegele is the youngest person ever to win the honor in any category.

Voegele will perform at the USA Songwriting Competition’s South by Southwest showcase on March 16 in Austin, Texas.

“I was so excited and surprised when I won,” says Voegele. “A lot of these entries and winners are professional songwriters, so I’m very honored to associate myself with such talented people.”

The award follows a series of honors for Voegele. “Only Fooling Myself” was featured on an episode of the CBS drama Clubhouse, she was one of three national finalists in a Pantene Pro-Voice competition and the January 2005 issue of Cleveland Magazine included her in a listing of the city’s “most interesting people.”

Voegele performed at Farm Aid in 2004 and 2005 along with Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp. During Miami’s winter break, she performed in New York for The Relief Project and sang the national anthem at a New York Knicks game.
