To conserve storage within the new muConnect e-mail environment, a disk allocation policy for student mailboxes will be implemented Jan. 20, 2008. This policy limits a student's mailbox size to 1 gigabyte (GB) on the muConnect server. Students may store unlimited amounts of e-mail offline, on a personal computer. There are no restrictions on e-mailbox size for faculty, and IT services reports no current plans to create any limits.
To help students manage their e-mailbox size, those approaching or exceeding the 1GB limit will receive notifications and, if the limit is exceeded, see a diminishment of their ability to send/receive e-mail, as follows:
- .9GB or greater: a warning will be sent as a precautionary measure. This e-mail is sent as a courtesy, to warn that the maximum mailbox size will be reached soon and allows for the deletion or archive of e-mail before the maximum is reached.
- 1GB: an alert will be sent that the maximum capacity has been reached. Additionally, the ability to send new mail will be disabled for any student whose mailbox size reaches 1GB. The account owner may still delete and archive messages and, when the account is under 1GB, the ability to send new e-mail will be restored.
- 1.1GB: An alert will be sent that the maximum capacity + 10 percent has been exceeded and the ability to send or receive new mail will be disabled for any student whose mailbox size reaches 1.1GB. The account owner may still delete and archive e-mail and, when the account is under 1.1GB, the ability to receive new e-mail will be restored; when the account is under 1GB, the ability to send new e-mail will be restored.
