The department of zoology and the honors and scholars program received academic program review awards, given for "excellent self-studies and favorable reviews." Provost Jeffrey Herbst announced the awards at the faculty assembly held Sept. 9. Departments and programs undergo academic program reviews every six years.
The department of zoology's external review report stated that the department "is a remarkably collegial unit.... Department leadership from Dr. (Doug) Meikle has provided faculty the opportunity to participate in shared governance.... The faculty are committed to Miami's mission of first-class undergraduate education, and they have seamlessly interwoven their teaching and research missions at all levels. The graduate program is healthy, with an extraordinary record of placement. Perhaps most striking is the department's ability to attract faculty to all three campuses who are equally invested in all of the department's missions."
The external review report for the honors and scholars program stated that the program "does credit to Miami University as a center of academic excellence. It recruits many of Miami's very best students, challenges them with rigorous learning experiences, supports them with close attention and funding, and graduates them as 'citizen scholars' who will succeed in their further work and be responsive to the serious community and global issues that demand remedies."
