Young Researchers Conference at Havighurst Center

The Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies hosts its eighth annual International Young Researchers Conference on "The Role of Law in the Construction and Destruction of Democracy in Post-communism" Oct. 24-25. Keynote lectures at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in 204 Harrison Hall, are open to the public.

Kathryn Hendley will present "Mobilizing Law in Contemporary Russia" at 11 a.m. She is the William Voss-Bascom Professor of Law and Political Science and associate dean of research and faculty development of University of Wisconsin Law School.

She has extensively studied the evolution of laws and legal institutions in postcommunist Russia. The author of Trying To Make Law Matter: Labor Law and Legal Reform in Russia, and of numerous scholarly articles, she serves as a member of the editorial boards for the journals Post-Soviet Affairs and Review of Central and East European Law.

Stephen Holmes will present "Lineages of the Rule of Law" at 4 p.m. He is the Walter E. Meyer Professor of Law and Political Science and senior faculty adviser at The Center on Law and Security, New York University School of Law. His research interests include the history of European liberalism, the disappointments of democracy and economic liberalization after communism. His most recent book, The Matador's Cape, analyzes the legal and constitutional dilemmas related to the war on terrorism. He has been named a Carnegie Scholar and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, among others, and from 1993 to 2003 was editor-in-chief of the East European Constitutional Review.
