Miami students and Shriver Center program board recognized

Miami University's program board and two seniors are recipients of top awards from the Mid America regional conference of the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA). The conference was held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Peoria, Ill. Awards were presented Nov. 1.

"It is a great honor," says program board adviser J.S. Bragg, assistant director of student activities and leadership. "No other school won as many awards as Miami."

Miami seniors Alicia Burrello, co-chair of the Charter Day Ball and Michelle Greenspoon, vice president of marketing and advertising and Shriver design chair, were named two of the three recipients of the outstanding undergraduate award.

Program board also took awards for three programs in four categories: the 3rd annual Redhawk Chef competition received the outstanding original program and outstanding multicultural program awards; Miami University with Zeta Tau Alpha sorority received the best educational program award for the 9th annual breast cancer banquet; and program board received the program of the year award for the 8th annual Grand Prix.

Redhawk Chef is a cooking competition with different cultural organizations competing in an Iron Chef-like format. The breast cancer banquet is held each spring with donations going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Grand Prix is program board's annual go-kart race, last year benefiting Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Regional awards fall into three budget categories with Miami competing in the $35,000 and under group. NACA's Mid America region includes schools from western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and eastern Missouri. More than 700 delegates representing hundreds of schools attended the conference.
