Miami University photography students mentored Union County High School students this fall to create community portraits for an exhibition that opens 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in the Union County Public Library, 2 East Seminary, Liberty, Ind. The exhibition continues through the month of December.

Miami students and Jon Yamashiro, associate professor of art, worked with high school students in Mandi Hensley's graphic design class taking pictures of the people in their surroundings, then editing, processing, printing, choosing and preparing the images for the exhibition titled "Portrait of Liberty 2008: A Photography Project."

Students also prepared a narrative that culminated in artists' books, which are part of the exhibition. "My students were challenged by the experience and grew as artists throughout the semester. I believe the high school students were also challenged and I sensed real growth and a change in attitude towards art from a few of them," Yamashiro said.

Miami students participating include: Sean Ballanger, Lauren Bangert, Stacy Bryan, Sarah Carr, Amy Deaton, Mihir Devare, Samantha Roberts, Laura Steckhahn, Ryan Van Dyke, Julia Richardson and Johnna Roark.

The project is supported by the Indiana Arts Commission, Union County Public Library, Summersault Inc. and other private donors. The project, in its fourth year, is a collaborative effort among Union County Public Library, Union County High School and Miami's art department.
