Miami graduate student wins nature photography scholarship

Molly Mehling (Miami M.En. '06), a doctoral student in zoology at Miami University, has been awarded a nature photography scholarship from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). She is one of 12 recipients selected from a record number of applicants in an international competition for the scholarship, worth up to $1,500, to attend the 2009 NANPA Summit in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mehling, a research associate in ecotoxicology and a visiting instructor in zoology, works with adviser Jim Oris, professor of zoology and associate dean of research and scholarship. Her dissertation research focuses on aquatic toxicology of Sierra Nevada lakes and reservoirs.

"Oris, my adviser and also a photographer, has supported my endeavors to make science more visual to increase interest in the field and to improve communication between scientists and non-scientists," said Mehling.

Recipients of the NANPA College Student Scholarship receive a professional portfolio review and NANPA membership along with full registration to the NANPA Summit, considered the premiere nature photography conference in North America.

NANPA ( is the first and only association in North American committed solely to serving the field of nature photography. It promotes the art and science of nature photography as a medium of communication for nature appreciation and environmental protection.
