A Human Rights and Social Justice Day at Miami will be observed Wednesday, Nov. 15. A proclamation will be delivered by the vice mayor of the city of Oxford at 1 p.m. in the Shriver Center multipurpose rooms.
Steven DeLue, senior associate dean of the College of Arts and Science, will give an address, "The Social Justice of Human Rights," at 1:15 p.m., following the proclamation. Events throughout the day include an information fair 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Shriver Center multipurpose rooms. Many international and national organizations including Doctors Without Borders, Darfur Coalition, OXFAM America and the National Center for Homeless Education will be represented, as well as local social service groups.
Other events, all in Shriver Center multipurpose room C, include:
• "Human Rights and Social Justice Film Festival" with screenings of "Turtles Can Fly" at 9 a.m.; "Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land: U.S. Media and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict" at 11:30 a.m.; and "A Peck on the Cheek" at 2 p.m.;
• 11 a.m., "Miami's Over-the-Rhine Residency Program," Thomas Dutton (architecture and interior design), director, Miami's Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine;
• 1:30 p.m., "Service Opportunities: How Miami Students Can Get Involved," Lauren Spero, office of community engagement and service;
• 4:30 p.m., keynote: "Fighting for Justice in a Changing World," Xavier Benavides, training and outreach coordinator, OXFAM America;
Benavides will also conduct a workshop, "Creating a Campaign for Social Justice," at 9:30 a.m. in 212 MacMillan Hall.
The Human Rights and Social Justice Day at Miami is organized by the Center for American and World Cultures (CAWC) and sponsored by the CAWC and many other university organizations.
