Three Miami students win study abroad award

Three Miami University students received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in spring 2009.

Carrie Almasi, a junior international studies major and French minor from Painesville, received $8,000 to study in Morocco; Joshua Hamm, a senior philosophy and art double major from Somerville, received $4,500 to study in India; and Julia Hughes, an art education major and art/architecture history minor from Kettering, received $4,000 to study in Italy.

They are three of 600 recipients from among 1,450 applicants for the award. The Gilman International Scholarship program, established by the International Opportunity Act of 2000, provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
