Miami professor Pratt editor of book on Ezra Pound

12/22/2008

Ezra Pound, Language and Persona, co-edited by Miami professor emeritus William Pratt.
Miami University professor emeritus William Pratt is co-editor of the newly released Ezra Pound, Language and Persona, published in Italy by Universita degli Studi di Genova, with support from the Ministry of University and Research, Rome.

The book, co-edited with Italian professor Massimo Bacigalupo, a noted Pound scholar, features 24 essays based on a 2005 conference held in Rapallo, Italy. It includes numerous illustrations.

Pound (1885-1972) was born in America but spent much of his life in Rapallo and Zoagli, where he is honored today by plaques on the houses where he lived and by a garden and street that bear his name. The landscape and people of the region figure prominently in his poetry. The 2005 conference was the second held in Rapallo; the book includes a listing of all Ezra Pound International Conferences by date and location. Conferences began in 1975; the 2009 conference will be held in Rome.

Pratt and Bacigalupo, writing in the introduction, say of the essays "at the conference it was good to see numerous young and dedicated scholars who are full of enthusiasm and projects for another century of confrontation with the puzzles and pleasures of Ezra Pound's world."

Pratt was professor of English at Miami from 1957 to 1998. He has written extensively on modern poetry and is author of several books including Ezra Pound and the Making of Modernism, Singing the Chaos: Madness and Wisdom in Modern Poetry and co-editor of The Big Ballad Jamboree with Curtis Ellison, Miami professor of history and American studies and director of the McGuffey Museum.
