Sturgeons named Parents of the Year
Nancy and Jim Sturgeon have been chosen as Miami’s Parents of the Year for 1999. They were honored at a surprise reception Tuesday, Sept. 28.
The Sturgeons will be formally presented at halftime of the Miami vs. Marshall football game at Yager Stadium Saturday.
Nancy, an instructor in physical education, health and sport studies, began teaching at Miami in 1956. For years, her social dance class has been filled to capacity. Jim was hired as an accountant in 1954, served as bursar from 1961-1989 and now is assistant to the director of financial aid. A pilot, he has flown Miami coaches on scouting trips.
Both earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Miami. Their three children all have Miami degrees: Jean, BS ’81; Jim, MBA ’87; and Janet MS ’87.
More than 60 letters were sent to the Parents of the Year Selection Committee in support of the Sturgeons. Stories ranged from Nancy’s transporting of elders to sporting events to Jim’s inviting a cable-less student worker to his home to watch Miami in the Sweet 16. Except for military service, Jim has attended every home football and basketball game since 1948.
Both have been known for their professionalism as well as for their giving and caring natures. Both have served as elders and deacons in the Presbyterian Church. Nancy volunteers for the Oxford Senior Center. Jim has been treasurer of the Presbyterian Church and Oxford Advisory Welfare Board and still is a timer at Talawanda track meets.
Parents of the Year are selected by the Parents Weekend committee of Campus Activities Council.
