ESPN broadcaster opens Lecture Series

WNBA play-by-play announcer Robin Roberts leads off the 1999-2000 Miami University Lecture Series with "A Celebration of Winning Women" Oct. 4.

Roberts joined ESPN in February 1990 and made her mark as one of the network’s most versatile commentators. Her lecture will focus on accomplished women as well as her success in broadcasting.

Roberts has received many honors and awards for her contributions to sports journalism and for expanding opportunities for female broadcasters in athletics. In 1996, the Women’s Institute on Sports and Education presented the inaugural Robin Roberts Sports Journalism Scholarship during the NCAA Women’s Final Four.

Roberts believes her success influences all women, giving them the courage to believe in themselves to achieve their goals in life, whatever those goals may be.

"I finally understood that I was setting an example for all women, not just the ones who wanted to be in broadcasting," she said.

Roberts’ primary duty is to call the play-by-play action during ESPN’s WNBA games.

In addition, she has contributed to Olympics and college basketball coverage and NFL Prime Time.

All lectures are at 8 p.m. in Hall Auditorium with tickets available at 7 p.m. at the Hall Auditorium box office the day of the lecture.
