Name change heightens visibility

This summer, Miami’s board of trustees approved changing the name of the School of Applied Science to the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Since seven of the school’s 12 programs are engineering related, the change better describes the mix of programs, said Don Byrkett (acting dean).

It also helps solve a visibility problem for Miami’s engineering programs, he said, explaining that prospective students and their parents are often surprised to learn Miami has engineering programs.

"We have excellent and distinctive engineering programs and we want students to know about them. This should help those programs with little impact on our other programs in computer technology, systems analysis and nursing," he said.

Focus groups demonstrated that the former name, School of Applied Science, did not convey information to prospective students about any of the school’s programs, whether computer technology, nursing, system analysis or engineering.
