Anita Silvers to give annual Robert Harris Lecture

Anita Silvers, professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University, will present the 20th annual Robert T. Harris Memorial Lecture at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, in the Heritage Room, Shriver Center.

Her topic will be "Rights Redux: Dislodging Discrimination Dead-ends in Identity Impasse."

Silvers will also take part in a discussion session, "Justice through Trust: Disability and the 'Outlier Problem' in Social Contract Theories," at 11 a.m. in the Bystrom Room, Shriver Center.

Silvers is a specialist in medical ethics and disability studies. She has written seven books, including Americans with Disabilities and Disability, Difference, Discrimination, and more than a hundred book chapters and articles. The California Faculty Association has honored her with its Equal Rights Award for her work in making higher education accessible to people with disabilities.

The Harris Lecture was established to honor late Robert T. Harris, chair of Miami's philosophy department 1959-1970.
