MUT to premiere award-winning play

"Two Thieves in a Trap" will be premiered in performances by the Miami University theatre department at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Gates-Abegglen Theatre, Center for Performing Arts.

The play, written by Miami student Tom Gannon, was named winner of the 1999 student short playwriting competition at the regional American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) held in Indianapolis, Ind., in January. After its premiere at Miami, the play will be performed at the 2000 ACTF at the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee, Wis., in January. Gannon won the regional competition last year as well with "Good Business."

Both plays will be published by Dramatists Play Service in an anthology of regional winners.

Directing the four-member cast is Chuck Leonard (theatre, Hamilton). The script follows two golfers and their caddies on an 18-hole outing that will change them all. To portray the golfers, Leonard sought actors to provide a contrast in age to the caddies and cast Henry Saas of Miami’s development office and Chris Nelson, a nontraditional student.

Playing the caddies are Joshua Green and Sean Casey, two first-year students majoring in communication and theatre, respectively.

Providing both lighting and set design is senior theatre major Dan Boggess, whose credits include lighting design for this semester’s MainStage production of "Twelfth Night." Among the challenges Boggess faces is creating a golf course that can fit into a standard 15-passenger van for transportation to Milwaukee.

Tickets are $3 and available at the Shriver Center box office, open
10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For ticket information, 9-3200.
