Czech exhibit at Hiestand Galleries
"Ten Days X Ten Years" opened Monday at Hiestand Galleries, School of Fine Arts. The traveling exhibition, curated by Miroslaz Cogan, features 60 pieces of jewelry from the permanent collection of the Czech Republic’s Okresni Muzeum.
The pieces were created during 10-day symposia organized annually by the museum and the Secondary School of Applied Art in Turnov, hence the "ten days" of the title. The "ten years" refers to the range of works exhibited, as they offer a 10-year survey of jewelry created in the Czech Republic from before and after the fall of communism.
The works rely on materials indigenous to the Turnov region.
Susan Ewing (art), who was instrumental in bringing the exhibition to Miami, participated in one of the symposia in the Czech Republic and has a piece included. She returned to Oxford this semester after two years as a senior Fulbright lecturer at the Prague Academy of Art, Architecture and Design.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday; the exhibition is through Dec. 10.
