Miami, UC to hold joint conference
An international conference, "Metaphysics into Science: Gender and Knowledge in the Early Modern Period" will be held April 6-8 on the campuses of Miami University and the University of Cincinnati.
Scholars from institutions in the United States, Canada, Europe and Russia will present papers on the histories of science and philosophy and European women’s and gender history. The conference is sponsored jointly by the departments of history at Miami and at the University of Cincinnati.
Events begin with the keynote address delivered by Jan Golinski on "The Care of the Self and the Masculine Birth of Science" at 4 p.m. today at UC. Golinski is associate professor of history and humanities at the University of New Hampshire and author of three books on the history of science.
Events conclude with the closing speaker, Sandra Harding on "Difference, Democracy and Philosophies of Science" at 3:40 p.m. Saturday at the Miami University Art Museum. Harding is a philosopher in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and director of the Center for the Study of Women at UCLA. Her most recent book is Is Science Multicultural? Postcolonialisms, Feminisms, and Epistomologies.
Complementing the conference is an exhibition at the Miami University Art Museum titled "Art/Science-Line/Design," which features works that are influenced by or connected to geometry. The exhibition runs through May 7.
