A committee assisting with the selection of a spring commencement speaker is asking across the campuses for suggestions of potential speakers.
The 10-member committee of faculty, students and staff was appointed by President David Hodge to provide him with recommended names to consider as speakers for the May 5, 2007, main commencement ceremony. Hodge said he created the new committee to seek broader, university-wide input, especially from students, to ensure the choice of the graduation speaker "becomes owned by the university."
The committee is accepting any suggestions of names of potential speakers "who will resonate with the graduating seniors and their families, be an eloquent and enjoyable speaker, and be in a position to reflect upon the accomplishments of the graduates," said Richard Little, senior director of university communications and chair of the committee.
Anyone at Miami can provide suggestions by sending a note by Dec. 1 to Little or by e-mailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org. The committee hopes to recommend several names to President Hodge by the end of the semester.
