Colin Powell to speak Oct. 17

Retired Gen. Colin L. Powell, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will speak on "Challenges of a Changing World" in presenting the inaugural Jack R. Anderson Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Millett Hall.

"I hope that… young Americans will no longer think about whether they have a duty to leave their community and their country better than they found it. They will just do it," Powell has said. Currently chairman of America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, Powell will meet with student leaders and ROTC members before speaking on the importance of duty to community and to country.

"General Powell embodies the mission of the Richard T. Farmer School of Business, which is to guide students to translate knowledge into responsible action," said Daniel Short, dean of the school of business, which invited Powell to speak.

As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, 1989-1993, Gen. Powell was primary military adviser to presidents Bush and Clinton.

In his current role with America’s Promise, Powell leads a crusade to improve the lives of our nation’s youth.

The lecture itself is an act of "giving back" by Jack R. Anderson ’47, president of Calver Corp. Anderson made a $1 million gift to the business school to fund the Jack R. Anderson Distinguished Lecture Series to expose students and faculty to people and ideas that are impacting business and society.

Admission is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m.
