MU Press poet to give reading

Prize-winning poet Molly Bendall will give a reading of her poems at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, in 102 Bachelor Hall.

Bendall’s second book of poems, Dark Summer, published by MU Press in 1999, was taught during winter 2000 in all 31 sections of freshman English at the U. S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Dark Summer was also featured in the spring 2000 catalog for the Academy of American Poets’ Book Club.

In a review in the fall 1999 issue of Harvard Review, critic Michael Tyrell writes: "Molly Bendall shares with Anais Nin an interest in desire as both physical experience and philosophical problem. Dark Summer, her brave second collection…is a wrestling match with the erotic, not simply a series of erotic poems."

Bendall’s first book of poems, After Estrangement, won the Peregrine Smith Poetry Prize in 1992. She has received the Eunice Tietjens Prize from Poetry magazine, the Lynda Hull Poetry Award from Denver Quarterly and two Pushcart Prizes. Her third book of poems, Ariadne’s Island, is scheduled for publication by MU Press in 2002. She teaches at the University of Southern California.

The reading, sponsored by the English department and the Ohio Poetry Circuit, is free and open to the public.
