Recycling commitment recognized by White House

Miami’s commitment to the National Recycling Challenge is leading the way in recycling efforts on college campuses, according to the White House Task Force on Recycling.

"Miami University was one of the first organizations to take a leadership role by making a commitment to make recycling more sustainable in America," says Fran McPoland, federal environmental executive and chair of the task force, in a letter commending the program.

Responding to the National Recycling Challenge announced in 1998, Miami’s recycling center made a commitment by increasing its already successful program. Through campuswide efforts last year, enough material was removed from Miami’s waste stream to eliminate 235 garbage truck trips to the landfill, saving over $200,000 in landfill fees, says Stacy Edmonds, associate recycling coordinator.

A summary of Miami’s recycling awareness program–the only such example from a university–is presented on the Web site (see box) and in informational materials for the White House Task Force on Recycling and National Recycling Challenge.

Miami is committed to increasing the success of its recycling program, which is directed by Steve Gaski, director for buildings and special services. "The program’s goals will only be met through the continued support of President Garland, university administrators and the entire university community," says Edmonds.

Miami is committed to expanding its recycling awareness program through:

• A promotional campaign on waste prevention;

• Expanding current facilities to become more cost efficient, less labor intensive and capable of processing more materials;

• Establishment of a campus Web page;

• Establishment of a formal recycling training program for all building service workers.
