Three students off to India for winter break
Three Miami music students will spend their winter break in India while studying all aspects of Indian music, thanks to the generosity of a Louisiana couple.
Joseph Shults, Adrianne Wininsky and Emily Power leave on Dec. 28 for a 16-day odyssey in southern India, where they will meet with students of Srinivas Krishnan and Indian music masters. Krishnan divides his time between a visiting faculty position at Miami, where he is artistic director of the Global Rhythms Ensemble, and a foundation in his native India that promotes Indian music.
Nine Miami students have previously visited India under Krishnan’s direction, with funding from Miami’s department of music and earnings raised by Global Rhythms’ performances. This trip, however, is different. Pratap and Shoba Reddy of Shreveport, La., hosted a sold-out Global Rhythms performance at Louisiana State University in September and were so impressed that Reddy "took out his checkbook and wrote a major support check then and there" to sponsor the trip, says Krishnan. Miami’s Indian Student Association is also providing support.
The Shreveport concert was one of the strongest performances ever by the ensemble, says Roger Davis (music) music director of the group. "What made the evening even more special was the attendance of the Governor of Louisiana, one of Louisiana’s congressmen, the mayor of Shreveport and the president of Louisiana State University."
