Melley to discuss fear and paranoia in America on WMUB’s ‘Book on the Air’
Timothy Melley (English) will discuss his book Empire of Conspiracy: The Culture of Paranoia in Postwar America for the third installment of the Miami University Book on the Air at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26. The program, co-produced by WMUB and the Friends of the Libraries, will be broadcast on WMUB-FM (88.5).
Cornell University Press says that Melley’s book "explores the recent growth of anxieties about thought-control, assassination, political indoctrination, stalking, surveillance and corporate and government plots. Nothing reveals this crisis more than the remarkably consistent form of expression that Melley calls ‘agency panic’ — an intense fear that individuals can be shaped or controlled by powerful external forces. Drawing on a broad range of forms that manifest this fear — including fiction, film, television, sociology, political writing, self-help literature, and cultural theory — Melley provides a new understanding of the relation between postwar American literature, popular culture, and cultural theory."
Book on the Air recognizes the scholarship of Miami faculty by providing a forum for them to discuss their books during a live broadcast.
Listeners can be part of the audience at 110 King Library or can hear a live Internet broadcast at www.wmub.org/listen.
